UT Southwestern and Parkland Hospital Stories: UT Southwestern and Parkland: Hard to separate one from the other
On Christmas morning a young man got into a car crash and sustained a major liver injury requiring surgery. Because most of the trauma surgeons had quit, the "trauma surgeon" on call was not a trauma surgeon. He specialized in weight reduction surgery (bariatric surgery).
He had been on the trauma call schedule at Parkland in the past, but was banned from taking trauma call around 2004 for causing an unnecessary death. He was told he could only continue to take trauma call if he took a two day course to give him basic training in trauma, but he refused.
